Maximize Your Vacation, Minimize Your Travel Expense
We’ve all been there, finding ourselves on the back half of our cruise and just wishing the cruise could last just a little longer. Well, back-to-back cruises might just be your dream vacation strategy. By booking two consecutive sailings on the same ship, you can extend your trip, visit more destinations, and often save money compared to booking one longer itinerary. Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser or planning your first voyage, here’s everything you need to know to make it happen—hassle-free and budget-friendly.
Why Book Back-to-Back Cruises?
Back-to-back cruises offer the best of both worlds—more time to relax and explore, with the convenience of never changing ships. Whether you’re after cost savings, new adventures, or VIP treatment, these consecutive sailings deliver it all.
- Extend your cruise vacation without changing ships — or cabins. One of the biggest perks of back-to-back cruising is that you can turn what would be a standard vacation into an extended adventure without ever switching ships. In many cases, you can even keep the same stateroom for both sailings, meaning no packing, unpacking, or the dreaded “moving day” in between. You simply enjoy breakfast on disembarkation morning, depart the ship (without all of your bags), check back in for the next voyage, and settle right back into cruise life.
- Visit more ports without flying between destinations
Back-to-back itineraries let you explore a broader range of destinations with minimal travel stress. For example, we once sailed a 10-night Mediterranean itinerary from Rome that visited ports in Italy, Greece, and Croatia. When we returned to Rome, the ship departed again—this time heading to France, Spain, and Portugal for a 7-night cruise. Instead of dealing with multiple flights, luggage fees, and airport lines, we simply walked ashore and then back onboard for a completely new adventure. - Take advantage of deals on shorter sailings
Cruise lines often discount shorter itineraries (like 4 or 5-night sailings) to fill cabins. By combining two short cruises—or pairing a short cruise with a longer one—you can create a vacation that’s as long as you want, often at a lower cost per day than booking a single extended cruise. - Keep your same cabin with proper planning
If you coordinate with the cruise line early, you may be able to keep your same stateroom for both sailings. This means your clothes stay in the drawers, your toiletries stay in the bathroom, and you skip the hassle of packing up between trips. To me, having the same cabin is a must, and I’ll even give up a great cabin location just to make sure I have the same cabin on both cruises….but that’s just me. - Earn extra loyalty points – and level up faster
Each cruise you take earns points toward the cruise line’s loyalty program. By booking back-to-back cruises, you double your point accumulation in a single vacation period—potentially unlocking benefits like free laundry, specialty dining credits, priority boarding, and exclusive events ze!).
How to Find Back-to-Back Cruise Itineraries
1. Search by Ship, Not Itinerary
Instead of searching by destination, head to the cruise line’s website and look up the sailing calendar for a specific ship. If a ship returns to the same home port on consecutive dates, you’ve found a potential back-to-back combo.
2. Use Travel Advisors
Cruise-savvy travel advisors can uncover back-to-back options you might miss and can often secure perks like onboard credits or better cabin placement.
3. Mix & Match Cruise Lengths
Pair a short 3 or 4-night sailing with a longer 7-night itinerary for variety and value. Shorter cruises often visit different ports, giving you a richer travel experience. And since 3 and 4-night sailings typically have a lower per-night cost, you’re overall cost per night is reduced, saving you money.
4. Repositioning & Grand Voyages
Repositioning cruises—when ships move between regions—can be paired with traditional itineraries for a month-long adventure at a fraction of the cost per night. (Check out our full post on Repositioning Cruises for tips.)
5. Search Multiple Departure Ports in the Same Region
Consider nearby ports like Miami and Fort Lauderdale if traveling from Florida, or from Barcelona and Civitavecchia (Rome) if traveling the Mediterranean. This will only expand your options to find that great cruise combination.
6. Check for “Collector”, “Linked”, “Grand”, or “Combo” Itineraries
Some cruise lines pre-package consecutive sailings under special names like Collector, Linked, Grand, or Combo voyages with built-in discounts. These pre-packaged sailings are usually offered by the “Premium” cruise lines. Other cruise lines promote back-to-back cruises, though rely on you or your travel agent to piece them together.
- Holland America Line – “Collectors’ Voyages”. These are pre-bundled, non-repeating back-to-back cruises that you can search and price like a single cruise.
- Azamara – “Back-to-Back Voyages / Grand Voyages.” Azamara promotes B2B (back-to-back) combos with onboard credit and allows booking under one reservation number. Their “deals page” spells out their B2B offers.
- Viking – “Grand Journeys” (Oceans) and “River + Ocean Voyages.” Viking markets combined itineraries as one seamless trip with published pricing. Visit them here to learn more.
- Princess – You’ll find long “20-day” (etc.) voyages already packaged, but there isn’t a separate “collector/linked” filter. Most of their back-to-backs are still booked as consecutive voyages. In this example, though, you will see a 20-night voyage, starting in Fort Lauderdale, stopping back in Fort Lauderdale on day 11, leaves again to arrive back in Fort Lauderdale on day 21. In this case, they have designed it for B2B cruises, going to 12 different ports.
- Celebrity – They have a clear B2B policy/definition, but do not provide a dedicated “collector” search path for public pricing. You can use the strategies noted above to book consecutive cruises or work with a seasoned Travel Agent.
Whether you decide to book a pre-packaged back-to-back cruise as noted above, or piece it together yourself, some of you might want to make sure your horoscope agrees with your travel plans. Check out Find the Perfect Cruise for your Zodiac Sign.

Tips to Make Back-to-Back Cruises Seamless
1. Book the Same Cabin
This saves you from packing up and ensures consistent service from your steward. If that’s not possible, you can aim for two cabins close together, though I always prefer the same cabin, which makes the transition day smooth sailing.
2. Notify the Cruise Line in Advance
They can arrange a smooth “in-transit” process, let you keep your belongings in your cabin if you’re not moving, and often deliver your new cruise card directly to your stateroom.
3. Plan Port Days Strategically
Use the turnaround day in your home port to restock supplies, explore more of the city, or meet friends/family mid-trip.
4. Know the Reboarding Process
Some countries require all passengers to clear customs between cruises. It’s quick—usually 15–30 minutes—and you’ll reboard before new guests.
5. Review Your Onboard Accounts
Use up any remaining credits, settle your bill, and confirm reservations for the second leg.
Back-to-Back Cruise Turnaround Day – What to Expect
If you’ve never sailed back-to-back before, turnaround day is surprisingly easy.
- Disembark without the rush – You’ll leave the ship with a small group of in-transit passengers, without the airport stress.
- Go through Customs and immigration check. You’ll typically go through a quick copyright check before you’re escorted back onboard.
- Stay in the same cabin (if booked this way) – No packing, just a quick refresh by your cabin steward.
- Changing cabins (if needed) – If you need to move cabins, in most cases, the crew will move your luggage for you.
- Early access to the new sailing – You’re often onboard hours before the new crowd arrives
- Enjoying a “private ship” feel – Since you are let back onto the ship early, you’ll enjoy quiet decks, empty pools, and prime photo ops.
MAK’n Waves Tip – Make the Most of Turnaround Day
To have an easy go of things on your “turnaround day”, we suggest:
- Packing a small day bag while your cabin is refreshed
- Confirm your cabin status early to avoid surprises
- Use quiet time to explore, relax, or take photos
- Check dining reservations for the new sailing
- Reconnect with crew for a personal touch on round two
Back-to-Back Cruises: The Big Picture on Benefits & Savings
Back-to-back cruising isn’t just about more time at sea—it’s about getting more value for every dollar you spend. Here’s why it’s such a smart choice:
• Airfare Savings
One of the biggest expenses in any cruise vacation is getting to and from your embarkation port. With a back-to-back, you only pay for flights once, but you enjoy two full cruises. For international sailings, this can mean saving hundreds—or even thousands—on airfare alone.
• Hotel & Transfer Savings
If you normally fly in a day or two early (which we always recommend), you’ll also cut your pre-cruise hotel and transfer costs in half by combining two cruises into one extended stay.
• Lower Daily Cruise Fare
Pairing discounted short itineraries or repositioning cruises can bring your per-day cruise cost down significantly—sometimes by 30–50% compared to booking a single, longer itinerary.
• Fewer Vacation “Lost Days”
Airports, layovers, and boarding days all eat into vacation time. Back-to-back cruises give you more days actually enjoying your vacation rather than traveling to it.
• Bonus Loyalty Perks
Because each leg of a back-to-back counts as a separate cruise, you’ll rack up loyalty points faster—potentially unlocking free perks on your very next voyage.
When you add it up, back-to-back cruising can be one of the most cost-effective ways to travel—especially if you’re already flying to a distant embarkation port. You’ll spend less on transportation and accommodations, and more of your budget goes exactly where it should… toward enjoying the cruise experience itself while you’re busy MAK’n Waves.
